Schools: Kindergarten at Harding, Blossom Gulch 1st-6th (Elk. free- throw winner), Marshfield Jr. High, Marshfield HS 1961-1965: • Freshman year - Football, Basketball, Track • Sophomore year - Football, Basketball, Baseball • Junior year - Cross Country, Basketball, Baseball • Senior year - Basketball, Baseball • Legion Baseball - Cross Country, Al Pierce Lumber summer team Basketball, Sophomore Year 1963: • Finished 11-11, 4th place in league. Not common at the time for a sophomore to be on the varsity team, was a starter by the end of the season. • 3rd leading scorer with 163 pts./ Avg. 7.4/game • Game high 22 pts. v. Thurston Basketball, Junior Year 1964: • Finished 17-5, 2nd place in league, state tournament team (18-7 incl. tourn), runner up to South Eugene who was the runner up in the state that year • Team Captain/2nd Team All League/3rd Team All State • 1-2 in State Tournament, defeating Klamath Falls in first game • Leading scorer in MHS tournament with 29 pts. • 18th on all time Pirates list with 358 pts., over100 FG/ Avg. 15.4/game Basketball, Senior Year 1965: • Finished 18-5, 3rd place in league • Lost 58-56 in OT to Springfield and didn't make the State Tournament • Team Captain/1st Team All League/2nd Team All State • Highlights - hit a shot at the buzzer in the first Springfield game for 66-65 win, scored 31 v. South Eugene, 12 for 17 • 351 pts./Avg. 17.8/game Ron was the first 2nd generation player in 50 years of MHS basketball and Ron's son Ryan (HOF for 1992 State Championship football team) was the first 3rd generation player. Ron and his dad Jack both led their teams in scoring during their Junior year. After Ron's junior year he was offered a full scholarship to Oregon State but an illness during his season affected his stats and the scholarship was pulled. Ron then attended U of O on a partial basketball scholarship. 1965-1966 - U of O Freshman team 1966-1967 Clark Jr. College he was a team captain and scored 250+ points. Also joined the National Guard. • 1968 Western Washington University - Ron transferred and didn't play this season, but he did travel with the team and played in Australia and Singapore. The team beat the Australian Olympic team on national television. • 1969-1971 - Played for Western Washington and received a teaching degree, BA in Education • 1971-1977 - Taught and Coached at Alsea 6th Grade teacher, Athletic Director, Football Varsity Asst. coach and Basketball Head Coach ' 74 - ' 77 • Football assistant 1972, Alsea won state championship over lone HS • Consolation winner in 1974 with a 20-4 record Ron and his family (wife Cheryl and two children, Missy MHS '85 and Ryan MHS '93) moved back to the Coos Bay area where he was a general contractor. He became involved with SWOYA during the early days of it's existence. He coached Ryan in soccer, baseball and basketball 1982-1986. He was also a SWOYA board member and involved with fundraising 1985-1987. He had a lifetime love for sports and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed steelhead fishing on the Alsea River and bird hunting in Eastern Oregon. He was a Pirate through and through and would have been very proud to be recognized in the MHS Hall of Fame. Ron passed away in 2008. |
