He was an assistant coach for Marshfield’s three consecutive state champion football teams from 1954-56. Haliski also is credited with starting both the wrestling and baseball programs for the Pirates, serving as head coach of each for nearly a decade, and serving as head coach of the golf program. He headed the Marshfield intramural program for many years and, in a joint venture with longtime basketball coach Bruce Hoffine, started and operated the summer recreation program in Coos Bay. After a standout high school (state champion for Tigard) and college (Pacific Coast Champion in 1958 and 1959) career, he came to the Pirates and led the team to the Midwestern League title five times during his tenure. He coached Marshfield’s first six individual state champions, including Steve Garner, who was a high school All-American. In 1971, he was named Man of the Year by Scholastic Wrestling News. He stayed active in the sport on a national and international level after his time at Marshfield, and served as the wrestling coordinator for the 1994 Goodwill Games and the wrestling competition manager for both the 1995 FILA World Freestyle Wrestling Championships and the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
