Heritage Hall
For years Marshfield faculty and alumni have been discussing the idea of recognizing and honoring the history of all aspects of Marshfield High School. In 2012 the Heritage Hall committee was formed to do just that. The committee consisted of Boyd Bjorkquist and Mike George, both 1973 MHS graduates, who serve as the committee chairmen; Butch Shields, MHS 1965; and Nancy Tedder, long time Coos Bay School District teacher and administrator.
The committee decided that the old wrestling room under the north stands in the main gym was the ideal location for Heritage Hall. They visited various buildings on the University of Oregon campus (the Jaqua Center, Matthew Knight Arena, the Casanova Center) for ideas and formulated a long-range plan for the construction of Marshfield's Heritage room. The committee, along with Joe Slack and HGE Architects, developed a blue print of what the room would look like and began fundraising in earnest. They, along with several others, including the technology class at MHS, developed a brochure which explained the project and recognized some of the careers and achievements of Marshfield alumni, which will be honored in Heritage Hall. Mary Paczesniak, MHS 1968; Bryan Trendell, MHS 1981; Sandy Reiber, MHS 1975; and Greg Mulkey, Marshfield athletic director and long time CoosBay School District employee joined the committee several months after its inception and added their insight and connections. Committee members began doing research on the history of Marshfield High School by reading all of the Mahiscans, dating back to the very first annual, the Kloshewawa in 1915; reading old Ma-Hi Times newspapers; researching in the Coos Historical Museum and interviewing alumni. Construction in the old wrestling room has been an ongoing process at the same time.
Heritage Hall is an exciting representation of the students, staff and events of Marshfield High School, with 14 separate 3 feet X 6 feet mural panels depicting significant events in MHS history. Display cabinets contain memorabilia of past times in the school's history. Flat screen TV's display a wide variety of programs. The room is available for class reunions and various group meetings. |
The Grand Opening for Heritage Hall was September 27, 2014. Please view the photo gallery and you will see why we are so proud of this new facility.
